Official says pilot 5G zones may appear in Western Siberia by 2020

KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Nov 27 (PRIME) -- Pilot zones of 5G mobile connection could appear in Russia’s Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District, Western Siberia, by 2020, head of the district’s IT department Pavel Tsiporin said on Tuesday.

“We came up with an initiative that Khanty-Mansiysk would become a pilot zone for testing 5G networks. We think that our city with a compact territory is promising in this sense…I think that, if our idea is supported, some pilot 5G zones could appear in the area by 2020,” Tsiporin told reporters.

But he said that people should wait for devices that support 5G, not the new standard as such.

The International Telecommunication Union plans to introduce the 5G standard by 2020, and it should appear in all Russian cities with more than 1 million people by 2024, according to the country’s digital economy program.
